Cyclist Awareness Test — the video
What to look for
Watch the footage as if you were the one driving, not a passenger idly watching the road go by. Take the counting task seriously, and pay attention to your own peripheral vision as the clip plays — notice when, and whether, the cyclist actually enters your conscious awareness.
What you should know
Most missed cyclists aren't missed because they were hidden — they're missed because the driver's attention was locked onto something else at the critical moment: a junction, a phone, a mirror check. The fix isn't more effort, it's a habit of deliberate, repeated scanning, so no single distraction gets a long enough window to cause harm.
